Nigerians love rice…white rice, fried rice, jollof rice, ofada rice, coconut rice, etc. So it was with much excitement that I received the news of the opening of a fast-casual restaurant dedicated to rice.
The restaurant is simply called ‘Rice’ and it is at Jubilee Mall, Plot 21 Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase One, Lagos. It is very conveniently located in the heart of the commercial district of Lekki.
The fast-casual concept has worked abroad, with American chains such as Five Guys, Chipotle and Shake Shack, and I am happy to see this spin on local cuisine, in Lagos. I hope they do inspire more chains featuring our local cuisines at home and abroad.
I stopped by Rice to grab a quick lunch and opted to build my own bowl, even though they have some set bowl options. The regular bowl costs N1,450 and you get one rice base, one sauce, one protein, and two sides. The large bowl costs N1,950 and you get two rice bases, one sauce, one protein, and two sides.
I was there quite late for lunch, just after 3 pm and there were no other customers there. I decided on a regular bowl, with a coconut rice base, ofada sauce, a protein option of peppered chicken and two sides of fried plantain and moi-moi. I was worried all of these wouldn’t fit in one bowl, but it does fit quite nicely. And everything was a delicious combo.
The peppered chicken was diced so you don’t have to worry about the bones and has the right amount of spice and crunch; the moi-moi was appropriately sized for the bowl; and the coconut rice had a good amount of coconut flavor. It was all quite enjoyable and because there were so many varied options in one bowl, I found I could not finish in one seating. There was even enough to save some for later.
Will definitely go back to try other options!
